Research Provision

Introduction

Research in Business and Management is one of the fastest growing and most challenging fields of scholarly activity at Newcastle Business School.

Globalisation plus increased challenges in domestic market means that today's business operates in a constant state of flux. To remain competitive, organisations need to harness their existing knowledge and develop techniques for creating new knowledge.

At the same time the legitimacy of business activity and its environmental and social obligations pose a considerable challenge to conventional management theory and practice.

Our Research activities have responded to these drivers with a variety of research themes based on an established track record of publication and consultancy:

  • Accountancy and Financial Management
  • Business Analysis and Information Management
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
  • Marketing, Travel and Tourism Management
  • Organisation and Human Resource Management
  • Strategic Management and International Business

Research Programmes

Within Newcastle Business School, there are currently over 70 UK and International PhD, DBA and DBL students engaged in research, reflecting the research themes of the School.

Increasingly, the international flavour of our doctoral research community means that the growth markets of China, South East Asia, The Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe are well represented in the research currently being undertaken.

What research programme is suitable for me?

Students applying to Newcastle Business School have a choice of three doctoral programmes: PhD, DBA or DBL.

The former is the traditional route to a doctoral qualification and involves a detailed investigation of a business and management area, culminating in an original contribution to knowledge.

The latter two have a more structured taught element at the beginning, with the main research focusing on a business problem and designed to make a significant impact on the student's own professional development.

Further details of these three programmes can be found here:

A dynamic and vibrant research culture

Newcastle Business School's research culture is embedded in each of our academic subject groups as well as our doctoral student community . Research focuses primarily on interdisciplinary themes with a strong emphasis on practical application.

Our researchers work within research themes and interest groups. Traditionally these have been external to business enterprises. However we are increasingly finding a need inside the workplace, often in conjunction with practitioners (business executives, managers and staff in both private, not-for-profit and public organisations) either as co-opted researchers or in commercial consulting.

Award-winning activities

Newcastle Business School research staff have made significant contributions to leading international refereed journals and academic conferences resulting in a number of awards in recent years including the MCB Literati Prize.

In addition to this, research staff are actively engaged in a wide range of consultancy and training activities with leading corporate organisations. Research activities underpin the core learning and teaching activities across the full range of Newcastle Business School's academic programmes.
