Executive Development Centre
There is no disputing that the performance of senior leaders is crucial to bottom-line success. In today’s demanding global economy, organisations will require leaders with exceptional abilities in order to survive and compete. To achieve this and avoid a leadership vacuum, organisations need to make a deliberate decision to establish a strong leadership culture and start developing future leaders today.
Newcastle Business School is poised to face this challenge by daring to be different. The Business School has launched its Executive Development Centre, with a focus on providing innovative, challenging and relevant development for senior leaders.

Our Philosophy
The thinking behind the Executive Development Centre is performance enhancement within a business context, enabling leaders to work 'on' themselves and 'on' their business.
Research-informed teaching and learning provides a robust basis to our programmes whilst facilitators ensure that the learning is practical, grounded and relevant by drawing on their extensive, real world business experience.
The Executive Development Centre is based at our purpose built, state-of-the-art Business School and has its sights set firmly on the future. As Jane Turner, Associate Dean for the centre points out:
"Our philosophy energizes, challenges and develops senior leaders - this is not traditional Executive Development"
Customised Leadership Programmes
Our overall philosophy is to develop leaders within their own business context enabling them to meet real time business challenges whilst achieving their personal development objectives. To this end we have worked with a number of organisations to develop leadership programmes that meet their individual needs.
Focus can be on the leaders themselves, developing the leadership team, or maximising organisation effectiveness.
Whilst each client has unique needs, there are some common areas of expertise that we have developed that may be relevant for many organisations.
- Authentic leadership - developing leaders from the inside-out. A robust leadership approach that values substance over style.
- Strategic thinking - developing a clear mission and vision and making the right strategic choices. Aligning your organisation to focus on key priorities.
- Creating a high performance culture that enables the organisation to deliver to its full potential through clear direction and customer focus, streamlined work processes, and, effective employee engagement through activities such as implementing a coaching culture.
Some common elements to our innovative, bespoke programmes are:
Short Courses and Consultancy
At times organisations need shorter interventions to enable their leaders to prepare for or manage specific business challenges. In this instance we work with the organisation to create a short, non accredited course that delivers the tailored, development product they need.
Recent programmes include:
- Authentic leadership
- Leading and locking in effective change
- Bringing strategy to life
- Developing a high performing executive team
Or you may want consultancy support to work through significant change, recommend approaches to organisation design, or give input to current initiatives. We will partner with you in a flexible way to meet your business needs.

Executive Coaching Service
Executive Coaching has been embraced by a number of senior leaders across all business sectors. Our coaching team are all hand picked qualified coaches with an impressive business background. The coaching philosophy is focused on performance enhancement through a process that enables personal reflective time and space to move issues forward within the business context. It provides a respectful and challenging platform that enables leaders to work on themselves - developing ‘thought leadership'
"The coaching programme provided me with the opportunity away from the workplace, to examine myself as a leader and senior manager, in a professional, safe and confidential environment. It has made me confront challenging issues and set clear goals and objectives in relation to my managerial and leadership style, which has increased my confidence and performance in my role.
My senior management team and middle managers have also undertaken a coaching programme and they too have benefited in this way. I consider the programme to be a fantastic opportunity for those who are committed to their personal and professional development and that of their staff"
Chief Superintendent, Northumbria Police
Open Programme: Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching
The fundamental aim of the Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching is to develop coaches who instinctively know how to select, apply, and integrate appropriate psychological, business and relationship coaching techniques into the day-to-day performance of an organisation. It is a fast paced and highly stimulating learning experience aimed at individuals who want to be challenged and developed and make an immediate and positive difference within their organisation.
"This course has been a superb introduction into both the art and science behind coaching. It explores the theoretical basis whilst allowing time for practical skills to be acquired and developed. The psychological foundation provided me with greater confidence to begin to explore the wider influences of professional behaviour. The course has been of great benefit both professionally and personally, and has ignited a spark in me that that I wish to continue to burn"
